The Former Beceanu Pharmacy
32 (26-28) Anastasie Panu
In Halei Square, on 26-28 Anastasie Panu, between Cizmăriei Street and the Hall, there was the pharmacy of Dumitru Beceanu. On June 29, when the Jews were grabbed out of their homes, shot, and taken to the Police Headquarters, Beceanu proposed to his two Jewish employees (Leon Zisu and his wife) to hide in his apartment above the pharmacy. Later on, other families were saved hiding in his apartment: the Caufman family, Ramhil, Rothnerg, Sarin Aizicovici, and Naftuli.
In May 1988, the Yad Vashem Institute awarded him the title ”Righteous Among the Nations” for risking his life during the Holocaust to save Jews.
